Paint correction in Chelmsford: swirl marks, scratches and what it costs to fix

Paint correction is machine polishing that removes swirl marks, light scratches and oxidation from a car's clear coat, restoring gloss and clarity before any protective coating goes on top. What correction actually fixes

Machine correction removes defects sitting in the clear coat — swirl marks from poor washing technique, light scratches from car park scrapes, water spots and general dullness — by carefully abrading a thin layer of clear coat until the surface below is level and clear again. It cannot fix a scratch that has gone through the clear coat into the colour or primer beneath, and it cannot repair a dent; those need a respray or bodywork repair instead, which Lusso Auto Care and New Again both also offer.

What it costs

None of the five publishes a fixed correction price locally. What can be said with confidence is that it is priced by how much work the paint needs: a car with light swirls from regular washing needs a lighter, quicker pass than one with years of neglect and deeper scratching, and the price scales with the number of passes and the time on the buffer. Correction versus ceramic coating

These are sequential jobs, not alternatives. Correction fixes what is already wrong with the paint; a ceramic coating, offered afterwards by all five businesses above, protects the now-corrected surface from new swirls and staining. A coating applied over uncorrected paint will seal in the existing defects rather than remove them, so if a business quotes you for coating alone on a car with visible swirls, ask whether correction is included or should be done first.

Before you book

• Ask how many stages of correction are included — a single light polish is quicker and cheaper than a full multi-stage correction on badly swirled paint.
