How to choose a car valeter or detailer in Cornwall

Cornwall spans eight market towns rather than one city, and coverage is very uneven between them. Camborne & Redruth is the deepest area with 14 confirmed businesses, spread from Redruth out to Helston and Mullion, followed by Truro with 10 and St Austell with 8. Three of the eight areas are thin by comparison: Bude & Launceston, Newquay, and Falmouth & Penryn each have only three confirmed businesses, so there is far less to compare there than elsewhere in the county. If you're in one of those three, it's worth asking a mobile business based in a neighbouring area whether it also reaches you before assuming the local handful is your only choice.

What the credentials found here mean

None of these is a legal requirement to valet or detail a car, but each shows something about the training, standing or track record behind the work.

  • Autoglym-accredited: Wheely Clean, also registered with Cornwall Traders (CTWCM0920/A).
  • Modesta-certified: Cornwall Car Care Valeting & Detailing, near Newquay.
  • Longer trading history: Kleen Machine since 1995, Dave's Valeting Service over 25 years, iShine Valeting over 20 years, Spandau Valet since around 2005, Pure Detailing Cornwall over 10 years, and Motomotion dating its experience back to 1979.
  • Registered limited companies: Chequered Flag Mobile Valeting Limited in Newquay, and Crystal Valet Centre Ltd, trading as Crystal Detail, in Helston, both confirmed at Companies House.
  • Independently verifiable ratings: none. No business in this Cornwall directory carries a rating from an allowed independent source (Google Maps, Trustpilot, Fresha, Booksy or Yelp) with three or more reviews. Crystal Detail has a 4.8-star rating from 19 reviews on a directory site, but that site is not one of the sources this directory can publish, so no star rating is shown here for any Cornwall business. Ask to see reviews directly rather than relying on a star count found elsewhere.

Questions worth asking before you book

  • Fixed premises or mobile - and if mobile, does the detailer bring their own water and power, or do they need yours?
  • Is the quote for a valet, or does it include machine paint correction and a coating first? TMS Garage's detailing prices, for instance, start at £250 for a ceramic coating and run to £575 for a two-stage enhancement, a different kind of job and price entirely from a £50-£100 valet.
  • Watch for similarly named businesses in the same area: iShine Valeting (a Truro studio) and I Shine Mobile Valeting Service (a separate Redruth mobile business), or Autoshine Valeting and Auto Shine Mobile Valeting, both based in Redruth at different addresses under near-identical names.
  • The great majority of listings here rest on a single directory entry rather than the business's own website - true of most of the Camborne & Redruth, St Austell, Bodmin & Wadebridge and Bude & Launceston businesses in particular. Ring first to check the business is still trading, what it charges, and what a wash or valet actually includes before assuming the listing is accurate or current.
  • If you're in Bude & Launceston, Newquay or Falmouth & Penryn, where confirmed choice is thinnest, ask a mobile operator based in a neighbouring area - Wheely Clean, Spandau Valet, GT Valeting and Pure Detailing Cornwall all say they travel across much of the county - whether they reach you, rather than assuming the three local listings are all there is.
