How to choose a detailer or valeter in Dumfries and the Borders

Fixed sites and mobile valeting across a rural patch

Dumfries and the Borders covers a lot of ground with relatively few towns, so coverage is uneven between areas. Dumfries and Stranraer & Newton Stewart are the best served, with five confirmed businesses each; Galashiels, Selkirk & Peebles and Kelso, Duns & Berwick-upon-Tweed each have four. Annan & Gretna, Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright & Dalbeattie, and Hawick & Jedburgh each have two, and Lockerbie & Moffat has only one confirmed business, Spotless Valet & Detailing Ltd, based in Ecclefechan just outside Lockerbie; it does also serve Dumfries, Annan and surrounding towns, so if you're in Moffat itself it's worth asking on the phone whether it reaches you before assuming it does. No dedicated business could be confirmed specifically based in Gretna, Selkirk or Kirkcudbright; the areas' listed businesses are based nearby and cover the wider catchment instead.

What the credentials found here mean

None of the badges below is a legal requirement to valet or detail a car, but each says something about the business behind the work.

  • Registered with Companies House: OCD Valeting & Detailing trades as OCD Car Valeting & Detailing Ltd.
  • Longer trading history: Auto Refresh Peebles draws on more than 39 years in the motor trade, Annan Valeting on more than 20 years, K17 Valeting & Detailing on around 13 years, and Spotless Valet & Detailing Ltd's team on 12 years in vehicle valeting.
  • States it is fully insured: Nathan's Auto Shine, in Duns.
  • Independently verifiable ratings: none. No Google, Trustpilot, Fresha, Booksy or Yelp listing could be confirmed with a visible rating for any business in this directory, so no star rating is shown anywhere on these pages; a count quoted on a business's own website, an online listing, or a search snippet is not the same as one that can be checked independently.

Questions worth asking before you book

  • Fixed premises or mobile - and if mobile, how far do they actually travel? Several businesses here cover a wide rural catchment (Spotless Valet & Detailing Ltd across Dumfries and Galloway, Borders Mobile Car Valeting a 25-mile radius from Galashiels, Elite Mobile Valeting & Detailing across Hawick, Jedburgh, Kelso, Melrose and Berwick-upon-Tweed), but a postcode at the edge of that area is still worth confirming.
  • If a mobile valeter is coming to you, do they bring their own water and power, or do they need yours?
  • Is the quote for a wash and valet, or does it include machine paint correction or a ceramic coating on top? Correction takes longer and costs more, and a coating over unaddressed swirls will not look any better than the paint underneath.
  • Tony's Valeting, Elite Valeting Centre, Auto Valet Express and Kar Hot Wash Valeting Centre have no website or social page of their own; what's published about them here comes from an online listing rather than the business's own pages. Ring first to check each is still trading at the address given before assuming the listing is current.
  • Tony's Valeting's old web address no longer belongs to the business and now points elsewhere online; use the phone number given here rather than searching for a website.
