How to choose a detailer or valeter in Torquay and Torbay

Studio, mobile, or hand car wash

This directory covers Torquay, Paignton, Brixham, Newton Abbot, Teignmouth & Dawlish, Totnes, Kingsbridge & Salcombe and Dartmouth, and coverage is uneven across them. Torquay has the most confirmed businesses at 11, followed by Paignton with 6, Brixham and Newton Abbot with 3 each, Kingsbridge & Salcombe with 3, and Teignmouth & Dawlish with 2. Totnes and Dartmouth are covered further down this page, plainly, since neither has a business confirmed to publish here.

What the credentials found here mean

None of these is a legal requirement to detail a car, but each says something about the training or track record behind the work.

  • Pro-Valets (PVD) approved or member: Riviera Detailing and A-Clean-Get-Away Ltd.
  • Ceramic coating certification named: A-Clean-Get-Away Ltd (Signature 4K, Matrix Ceramics).
  • Longer trading history: Fine Shine has traded since 1992, A-Clean-Get-Away Ltd since January 2016, and L.Jones Valeting & Detailing (Deluxe Detailing) since 2023.
  • Stated insurance and compliance: Major Detail states £2m public liability insurance, COSHH compliance and VAT registration.
  • Independently verifiable ratings: none. No business in this town carries a rating from an allowed independent source (Google, Trustpilot, Fresha, Booksy or Yelp) with a working link and at least three reviews. TidyRide Detailing's own site states a 5.0-star average from 136 Google reviews, but the link provided only opens a write-a-review form rather than a page showing the rating itself, so it is not shown here.

Same building, different businesses

Two addresses in this research host more than one detailing business trading separately, under different names, phone numbers and (where given) social accounts. At 4 Higher Yalberton Road in Paignton, Platinum Detailing shares the trading estate with another detailing business under a different name. At Centurion Works on Lower Union Road in Kingsbridge, Fine Shine shares the small industrial yard with another. Only one business at each address is listed in this directory; say the business name you found when you call, since more than one company operates from the same postcode.

Totnes and Dartmouth: no confirmed local business

Totnes has no locally-based detailer or valeter confirmed anywhere in this research. Every lead traced back to a business actually based in Paignton or Torquay, several miles away, and already listed under its real town above. Dartmouth fared only slightly better: one mobile valeter's name and address were found, but no phone number could be confirmed for it, so it is not listed in this directory either, in line with the rule that every listing needs a working number. Coverage in both towns depends entirely on the region-wide mobile operators who say they travel there: Major Detail, Fine Shine and Bay Detailing all name Totnes and Dartmouth among the places they cover from their bases elsewhere in Torbay and the South Hams.

Questions worth asking before you book

  • Fixed premises or mobile - and if mobile, does the detailer bring their own water and power, or do they need yours?
  • Is the quote for a wash and protect, or does it include machine paint correction first? Correction takes longer and costs more than a routine valet.
  • For a hand car wash: is it walk-in, or do you need to book ahead, and does it offer valeting beyond the wash itself?
  • If you are in Totnes or Dartmouth, ask directly whether the mobile operator you are calling actually reaches your postcode and what the call-out involves.
  • At 4 Higher Yalberton Road in Paignton, or Centurion Works in Kingsbridge, confirm which named business you are booking, since the address alone will not tell you.
