PPF (paint protection film) in Wakefield: who fits it and is it worth it

Paint protection film (PPF) is a thick, clear urethane film applied to a car's most exposed panels — typically the front bumper, bonnet and wing mirrors — that physically absorbs stone chips and light impacts rather than simply resisting stains the way a ceramic coating does. CC Valeting UK, run by Carl from a unit on Addingford Lane in Horbury with what its own site calls a decade of dedicated detailing expertise, lists PPF as its first published service, ahead of a new-car protection detail and single, two and multi-stage paint correction. Obsessive Detail in Ossett offers PPF alongside ceramic coating and paint correction, and covers Wakefield, Leeds, Pontefract, Castleford and Normanton from its Ashley Industrial Estate studio.

What it costs

None of the three publishes a fixed PPF price, so expect a quote based on which panels are covered and the make and model of car. PPF is typically sold by coverage area — a partial front-end package against a full car wrap — rather than as a single flat fee, and the film itself is a bigger material cost than a ceramic coating. Ask each business for a like-for-like quote covering the same panels if you are comparing prices between them.

PPF versus ceramic coating

The two protect against different things and are often confused. Ceramic coating, also offered by all three of these businesses (see our Wakefield ceramic coating guide), makes a surface easier to clean and more resistant to chemical staining and UV fade, but it will not stop a stone chip. PPF is a physical film that genuinely prevents chips on the panels it covers, but does nothing for the rest of the car's paint. All three businesses offering PPF here also offer ceramic coating, and the two are commonly combined: PPF on the most exposed panels, a ceramic coating over the whole car for the finish and easier cleaning everywhere else.

Is it worth it

PPF is the more expensive of the two protective products, and it makes the most sense for a car that does a lot of motorway miles, is kept for a long time, or is new enough that the owner wants to keep the front end chip-free. For an older car, or one that will be sold within a couple of years, the extra cost over a ceramic coating alone is harder to justify unless stone-chip damage is already a known problem on the roads you drive.

Before you book

• Ask exactly which panels are covered by the quote — front bumper and bonnet only, or the wings and mirrors too — since this is where most of the price difference between packages comes from.
• Ask whether the film is self-healing, meaning light swirl marks in the film itself disappear with warmth, a feature some PPF products have and others don't.
