Ceramic coating in Chelmsford: what it is and what it costs
Ceramic coating cures onto a car's paintwork into a hard, glass-like layer that resists light scratches, chemical staining and UV fade, and makes the surface easier to keep clean. It is offered by seven of the fifteen businesses listed for Chelmsford, more than any other premium service in the local data, and nearly every one of them pairs it with paint correction rather than selling it on its own.
Who offers it
New Again Auto Reconditioning on New Street, trading since 1987, applies ceramic coatings in several brands alongside paint correction and is a member of the RMI Trust My Garage scheme. Autoart Detailing Ltd on Pools Lane is CarPro accredited and was named CarPro New Installer of the Year for 2023 to 2024, and is also accredited for Kamikaze Collection and Alien Magic coating products. DrX Detailing Lab's owner completed Gtechniq's dedicated coating-application training and runs a monthly maintenance plan for keeping a coated finish looking its best. Joyce Design UK Ltd on the Widford estate, a 3M Expert Approved PPF installer better known for paint protection film, also fits Gtechniq five-year ceramic coatings. Lusso Auto Care on Hanbury Road, a bodyshop aimed at supercars and classics, applies self-healing paint protection film alongside ceramic coating and correction. iValet UK, a regional mobile operator covering Chelmsford, Braintree, Colchester, Harlow and Epping, has a Gtechniq-qualified installer and a drop-off studio for coating work. Superior Detail, a mobile business based in Chelmsford, offers ceramic coating alongside valeting, showroom detailing and machine polishing.
What it costs
None of the seven publishes a fixed ceramic coating price in the local data. Joyce Design's published paint protection film prices, from £850 for essential coverage to £1,300 for premium, give a sense of the scale of pricing at the top end of this market locally, though PPF and ceramic coating are priced separately and are not directly comparable: a ceramic coating on its own is a smaller job than a film installation. Expect any of the seven to quote based on the car's size, the paint's condition and the coating brand and warranty length chosen.
The accreditations worth knowing
- CarPro accredited installer: Autoart Detailing, named CarPro New Installer of the Year 2023/24.
- Gtechniq: DrX Detailing Lab (owner trained in application), Joyce Design (fits Gtechniq five-year coatings), and New Again (uses Gtechniq alongside other brands).
- 3M Expert Approved: Joyce Design, for paint protection film rather than coating specifically.
- RMI Trust My Garage: New Again Auto Reconditioning, a consumer-protection scheme rather than a coating-specific accreditation.
None of these is a legal requirement to apply a coating, but each shows a level of training and, for the coating brands specifically, a route back to the manufacturer if the product fails to perform as promised.
Before you book
- Ask whether correction is included in the quote — a coating over unclipped swirls won't look better than the paint underneath, and correction is what several of the businesses above, including New Again and Autoart, do as standard before coating.
- Ask which coating brand is used and its warranty length, since this is where most of the price difference between studios comes from.
- If you want the work done at home rather than dropping the car off, DrX Detailing Lab and Superior Detail both work mobile; the rest need the car brought to a fixed studio or workshop.
